Black & White

This year-long study required homework. WHAT? Oh yes, and it was rigorous. Really pushed me out of my confort zone, and I learned from it! Of all the pices during that 12 months, this one is my favorite. It's a song by Sarah McLaughlin, Black & White. Final measurement is 36x24, unframed.

Dark Road

This was the final piece I did that year. The butterfly you see is pastels. Rarely have I worked with pastels, but I really needed something subtle and blendable. "Dark Road" is a song by Annie Lennox. In fact, I took this piece to a concert. Waiting back stage for her in the pouring rain in hopes she'd sign it. SHE DID!

Watercolor

Another very challenging piece. The white space around the word "watercolor" is actually cut out. Behind it you see a piece of green marbled paper. A tedious process that had a worthwhile result. This is another song by Annie Lennox actally called, "Pavement Cracks." I took creative liberties and used "watercolors" as the focal point.

Neuland

This piece was made possible by bleach. Yes, good ole fashioned bleach coupled with the lettering skills of a calligrapher. The colors you see were added afterwards primarily with pastels and chalk. *From the workshop, Spontaneous Combustion. Cost $125. Size 5.75x18

Georgia O'Keefe

Awh, the art of layering. This piece displays a quote from the talented, Ms. Georgia O'Keefe. Materials are: Walnut & Sumi inks, red tissue paper, and gouache for lettering. *From the workshop, Spontaneous Combustion. Size 8.75 x 20

Petals

So much is going on with "Petals" it's difficult to describe. Walnut ink & Dr Martins TECH ink provide the rich background. The black marks were made using an automatic pen and sumi. You'll see calligraphy written along the swirls. Final thoughts ... swirls were created by chopsticks when background was wet.
